Lillian Rose Kiyutelluk

Lillian Rose Kiyutelluk

July 6, 1943 ~ June 5, 2021

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend Lillian Rose Kiyutelluk peacefully passed away on June 5, 2021 while surrounded by family and friends.

Lillian was born at Ikpek on July 6, 1943.  She married Steven on September 2, 1964, together they six children Janet, (Ronald), Lloyd, Archie, Peggy and Rachel.

Lillian previously worked as a Head Cook for the Shishmaref School, retiring after more than 25 years of service.  She enjoyed the company of her co-workers and the students she served.  Steven also worked as maintenance in the Shishmaref School along-side Lillian, and together they made many friends.

Lillian was a loving provider to many people.  She always fed her visitors well and gave them a good place to sleep.  Lillian enjoyed sewing slippers, hats and booties, beading and crocheting, kuspuks and especially making parkies.  She mostly made parkies for herself and her family, but also made a few for others as well.

Lillian learned how to preserve and prepare Native food from her mother Irene Olanna, as well as other ladies in the community.  She preferred to work by herself when cutting oogruk, however, she would accept help from others if she was labored with health issues.  Lillian loved to cook and bake for her family and friends.  Many people savored her salmonberry agutuq and cinnamon rolls.  Lillian loved camping at Serpentine River, and up and down the coast to pick salmonberries and black berries.  She often invited some friends from other villages to pick berries with her.

Lillian enjoyed going to church.  She and Steven attended services as often as they could.  She made many friends while traveling to other villages for church gathering events, such as the Friends Church AYM, Lutheran Church Conferences and the Kivalina Easter Get-Together.

Lillian enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.  She felt happy when the kids ate, and she knew each child’s favorite food.  She also cared for and was fond of many children and adults in our community and other communities as well.

We will miss her greatly, and she will forever be in our hearts.

Lillian is survived by her husband Steven Kiyutelluk; her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Janet Kiyutelluk (Jim Barr); Pauline Barr (Johnny Pootoogooluk), Julie, Jake, Jaxon and Lilly Barr; Anna Barr (George Conwell), Adalyn Barr, Eliyah Barr, and Krissa Conwell; Dolly Barr,  Lacey Barr; Alfred Barr; Lloyd Kiyutelluk; Archie Kiyutelluk; Peggy Hersrud (John Hersrud), Debra, Jeremiah and Heidi Hersrud; Rachel Kiyutelluk (John Nattanguk), Erica, Hattie and Kurt Nattanguk.
