Joseph Kunnuk, Sr. Ahnatook

September 17, 1940 – November 11, 2025

Joseph Kunnuk, Sr., Ahnatook, was born on King Island, Alaska, to Agnes and Leo Kunnuk, Sr. He was lovingly raised by his grandparents Aissona and Olagana, who lived on King Island before later moving to Nome.
Joe received his early education on King Island. As a young man, he learned the traditional art of ivory carving by observing his grandfather Olagana and other respected carvers in the community. This knowledge became a lifelong passion and a meaningful connection to his heritage.
Throughout his life, Joe worked for the US Mercantile “Stop, Shop and Save,” Alaska Commercial Co., and served as an instructor for the Art & Culture classes at Nome Beltz High School for nine years.
He also served his country with dedication and honor for 24 years in the Army National Guard.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mary and their children: Mary Jane (Darren), Joe Jr., Pauline, Charlene (Richard), and Agnes (Andrew). He is also survived by his siblings Adriene (Babe) and Willie (Karen); his grandchildren Brigette (Jon), Brenna, Nicklas, Makenzie, Jacob, John, Cameron, Kristina, Kara, Gracie, Peyton, and Alesa; and his great-grandchild, Kastilyn. Joe was also loved by many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo Sr. and Agnes; his siblings Leo Jr., Vince, Marie, Peter, Paul, Tim, Dominic, Julie, and Charlie; his children Vincent and Christine; and his grandchildren Briar and Judith.
Joe was deeply loved by many.
The Kunnuk family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported them, including those who contributed through GoFundMe and the corporations who offered assistance.
Military Honors and burial will take place at the Nome cemetery summer 2026.
